PPP accepts Gilani's disqualification verdict

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has accepted the decision of the Supreme Court disqualifying Yusuf Raza Gilani as the prime minister.
The decision was taken during the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting held at the presidency.
Sources add that the PPP will put forward the names of candidates for the post of prime minister during a meeting of the coalition partners scheduled for Tuesday night. The names of Makhdoom Shahbuddin, Khursheed Shah and Ahmed Mukhtar are under consideration.
The PPP Parliamentary Party meeting has also been summoned on Wednesday to review the Supreme Court's verdict .

President Zardari cancels Russia visit

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday cancelled a visit to Russia in a bid to contain a domestic crisis sparked by the Supreme Court disqualifying Yusuf Raza Gilani as prime minister, a spokesman said.
Zardari was due to attend the June 20-22 St Petersburg International Economic Forum but would now hold talks with coalition partners "to consider the situation (at home) and formulate a course of action," his spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
The president held emergency talks with leaders in his main ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and summoned coalition parties to meet later Tuesday to decide how to respond, officials said.
Senior PPP members appealed for calm as isolated protests were held around the country, in a sign that the party was perhaps most likely to decide on electing an alternative prime minister rather than contesting the court ruling.
"Though we have reservations about this judgement, we will take advice from the allied parties and legal experts and will then chalk out a strategy for the future," Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira told reporters.
"The central executive committee has advised all party workers to remain calm and show patience and not to protest against the verdict," he added.
Asked whether the PPP was considering a presidential pardon for Gilani, the information minister said "no such suggestion is under consideration".
PPP secretary general Jehangir Bader said the party executive committee had given Zardari "complete authority... to take any decisions after taking advice from the allied parties".

Misbah gets test ban for slow over-rate

DUBAI: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been banned from the first test against Sri Lanka in Galle that starts on Friday as punishment for his team's slow over-rate in the final match of the one-day series.
The visitors were three overs short of the required rate during Monday's match in Colombo, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a news release on Tuesday.
The ICC added that this was a "“serious over-rate offence"in limited-over cricket. A Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman told Reuters that Misbah
would be replaced as skipper on Friday by vice-captain Mohammed Hafeez.
Hafeez has captained Pakistan in two Twenty20s but has yet to lead the team in a one-dayer or a test.
The Pakistan players involved in Monday's encounter, a game they lost by two wickets to suffer a 3-1 defeat in the series, were fined 40 percent of their match fees by the ICC.
The fines were based on a 10 percent penalty for each of the first two overs and a further 20 percent for the additional over they failed to bowl in the allotted time of three and a half hours.
It is the second time in six months an international captain has been suspended for a slow over-rate.
India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was also banned for the fourth test against Australia in January.
Dhoni was punished for incurring two over-rate breaches in the same form of the game in a 12-month period.
India were three overs short of their required rate in a test against West Indies in Barbados in June 2011 and then two overs short in Perth this year.
